Skeleton Crew

Falcons,

FBN ran on a skeleton crew today due to the 5th grade Extravaganza this morning in the cafeteria...Thanks to Ms. Cole for helping out today. At the Extravaganza, 5th graders learned about the various Fine Arts opportunities available here at Long....such as Band and Orchestra.

Black History Month: Fact of the Day

Maya Angelous's autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is the fist non-fiction work by an African American woman to make the best-seller list. She also wrote and read her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration.

Black history fact of the day- The Tuskegeee Airmen were the first African American pilots in the U.S armed foces. Beginning in 1941, select goups of extensively tested and rigorously trained African Americans were trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Pasta For Pennies

Falcons,

NJHS is working to prevent cancer by raising money...."Pasta for Pennies." The winning class after two weeks will earn a pasta party from the Oliver Garden. Today, is "Keep an Eye on Cancer" so we hope you brought your ipod or mp3 player to play at lunch.

Celebration Wheel: Mr. Magnis recognized Dustin Carrera, Mansoor Kahn, Claudia Lay, and Alexis Rogue...congrats to these students for their great work.

Black History Month Fact: Ray Charles Robinson, a musical genius and pioneer in blending gospel and the blues, shortened his name to "Ray Charles" to prevent confusion with the great boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. He was one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony in 1986.

todays black history fact is......On this date in 1990,Nelson Mandela,leader of movement for democracy in South Africa and was released from prison after 27 years. He was an instrumental leader against apartheid.
